Staying in contact with customer database

It is a fact that the lifeline of business is it's customer base. Warren Buffet says that he wouldn't invest in a business that doesn't base sales on repeat customers.
Marketing masters such as Dan Kennedy recommend that a business touch base once a month or at least quarterly though a postcard or preferably a newsletter.
My question is: How do we apply the above to the air duct cleaning industry?
Do you spend the money with mailers to thousands of past customers to stay in touch even considering that fact the most people will not clean their air ducts again on a regular basis?
